Ethiopia Christians Celebrating Finding of True Cross Meskel: Cultural Heritage Inscribed by UNESCO

Introduction

Meskel, one of Ethiopia's most spectacular religious festivals, commemorates the finding of the True Cross (Meqdes) by Queen Helena (Eleni) in the fourth century. Celebrated annually on September 27th (or September 28th during a leap year), Meskel represents the deep spiritual heritage of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and has been inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The celebration draws hundreds of thousands of faithful to Meskel Square in the heart of Addis Ababa, where a towering bonfire known as the "Demera" is lit in a spectacular ceremony that combines faith, culture, and community. The event is a powerful reminder of Ethiopia's ancient Christian traditions that have endured for over 1,600 years.

The Demera Bonfire Ceremony

At the center of the Meskel celebration is the Demera — a massive bonfire constructed from wooden logs and decorated with daisies (Meskel flowers). The Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church leads the ceremony, blessing the Demera before it is set ablaze at dusk. As the flames rise into the night sky, the crowd erupts in hymns and prayers, creating an atmosphere of profound spiritual energy.

According to tradition, the direction in which the Demera falls after burning predicts the year ahead. If it falls to the east, the year will be blessed; if to the north, challenges may lie ahead. This ritual has been performed for centuries and remains one of the most visually stunning religious ceremonies in Africa.

UNESCO Recognition

In 2013, Meskel was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognizing its significance as a living expression of Ethiopian cultural identity. The inscription acknowledges the festival's role in fostering social cohesion, transmitting traditional knowledge across generations, and promoting mutual respect among communities.

Meskel Beyond Addis Ababa

While the largest celebration takes place in Addis Ababa's Meskel Square, the festival is observed across the entire country. In smaller towns and rural villages, communities gather around their own Demeras, singing traditional songs and sharing meals. Each region adds its own cultural flavor to the celebration — making Meskel a truly national experience that bridges urban and rural Ethiopia.

The Meskel flower (Adey Abeba), a yellow daisy that blankets the Ethiopian highlands at the end of the rainy season, serves as a natural herald of the festival. Its appearance transforms the landscape into a sea of gold, making the weeks leading up to Meskel one of the most photogenic times to visit Ethiopia.
