Fear nothing: Elias Sime’s creative journey will help you rediscover Ethiopia’s vibrant soul.
Introduction
Elias Sime is one of Ethiopia's most visionary contemporary artists, whose monumental mixed-media assemblages have earned him international acclaim and positioned him at the forefront of global contemporary art. Born in Addis Ababa in 1968, Sime transforms discarded electronic components — circuit boards, computer keys, wires, and motherboards — into breathtaking works that blur the boundary between painting and sculpture, technology and nature, the digital and the organic.
His landmark touring exhibition "Elias Sime: Tightrope," organized by the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art, represents the first major survey of his work in the United States and has introduced audiences worldwide to his extraordinary creative vision.
From Addis Ababa to the World Stage
Sime studied at the Alle School of Fine Arts and Design in Addis Ababa before establishing his studio in the city's Bole neighborhood. Early in his career, he worked with natural materials — sisal, leather, and clay — but gradually began incorporating electronic waste as Ethiopia experienced rapid urbanization and the proliferation of technology.
His shift to electronic materials was both an artistic and environmental statement. By repurposing the detritus of the digital age, Sime creates works that speak to the interconnectedness of human civilization and the environmental cost of technological progress. His pieces often evoke aerial views of landscapes, satellite imagery, or the intricate patterns of traditional Ethiopian textiles — all rendered in the language of discarded technology.
The Tightrope Series
The "Tightrope" series, his most ambitious body of work to date, explores the precarious balance between progress and destruction, tradition and modernity, nature and technology. Each piece in the series can take months to complete, with Sime and his team meticulously arranging thousands of electronic components by hand. The resulting works shimmer with color and movement, their surfaces alive with the iridescent greens, golds, and blues of circuit boards and wiring.
Legacy and Impact
Beyond his personal practice, Sime has been instrumental in nurturing Ethiopia's contemporary art scene. He co-founded the Zoma Museum, a living art space on the outskirts of Addis Ababa that combines contemporary art with sustainable architecture and environmental education. The museum, built using traditional construction techniques and recycled materials, serves as both a gallery and a community space — embodying Sime's belief that art should serve a social purpose.
